Bloomington,
IL - The Illinois Shakespeare Festival
The Illinois Shakespeare Festival
represents a long-established tradition of professional
theatre devoted to performing the plays of Shakespeare on
the grounds of Ewing Manor in Bloomington.
The Festival originated in 1978 as a joint enterprise of the
Illinois State University Department of Theatre and the
College of Fine Arts, in cooperation with the Illinois State
University Foundation (a not-for-profit enterprise). From
the beginning the productions have been performed in an
open-air, Elizabethan-style theatre constructed on the site
of the abandoned tennis court on the grounds of Ewing Manor
in Bloomington.
The Illinois Shakespeare Festival is known nationally in the
theatre community as one of the top Shakespeare Festivals.
The Illinois Office of Tourism nominated the Illinois
Shakespeare Festival as one of the top 120 attractions in
the country.
